The Making of Makerbot Replicator XL

When were at Maker Faire 2012 a few weeks ago, we were looking at all the taller 3D printers and thinking of what we wanted to do next.  My son decided he wanted to try and “stretch” his Replicator to be able to print higher.   When he got back home, he started taking measurements.  He decided that he could add 100mm to the height with minimal alteration of parts. I am sure he will add more to the topic on here and on the Makerbot Blogs & Forums.

This is a MakerBot Replicator after you take it out of the case. Front, Sides and Back removed.

Now all you have to do is order a couple of Smooth Rods that are 100mm longer than the stock rods.

Get some wire to splice into the wires that have to be extended.

Get the new case pieces laser cut

Here is the XL case fitted together

Now to assemble the parts, extend the wires and reverse the Z rod nut plate

Here is the test print, printing on the Replicator XL

Here are two prints of the same object.  On the left is MAX height on stock Replicator and on the Right is the same part maxed out on the Replicator XL.
